Dudley Council has approved a £3 million investment package designed to improve Stourbridge town centre. The proposals focus on making the town safer, healthier and more attractive for residents, businesses and visitors.
The council has submitted a business justification case to the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), which manages the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements (CRSTS) fund. The CRSTS is a consolidated fund from the Department for Transport provided to Mayoral Combined Authorities for capital transport packages.
What will be improved
If approved by the WMCA, the first phase will draw down £3 million and focus on:
Improving access for pedestrians and cyclists at the northern gateway on Lower High Street and Bradley Road, and the southern gateway on Upper High Street. Public realm improvements will be made to the High Street, Market Street, Ryemarket Square and Foster Street. New pedestrian crossing points are planned by Ryemarket Square and at Foster Street.
The proposals were developed following consultation with residents, who indicated they wanted improvements to the town's gateways, streets and public spaces.
What happens next
Once the WMCA confirms the funding, work will begin in spring. The council proposes to deliver the project in phases beyond the first phase.
