Dudley Council has reported its strongest financial performance in recent years, according to a report presented to Cabinet on 10 August 2026. The council ended the year in a stronger position than previously forecast, reflecting improved financial management and rigorous budget controls across the organisation.

The 2025/26 Budget Outturn Report details a strong financial position that the council says demonstrates progress in restoring financial stability. During the year, the council delivered the majority of its planned savings while continuing to support residents through economic pressures.

Reserves Strengthened

The council has used its improved financial position to strengthen its reserves, improving financial resilience and helping protect services from future economic uncertainty and increasing demand pressures. However, the council acknowledges that reserves remain low compared to other comparable councils and continues to work on building them further.

Council's Response

Councillor Steve Clark, Cabinet Member for Resources, said the result reflects the dedication of staff, the determination of senior leadership, and difficult decisions made by elected members to put the council on a more sustainable footing.

"Over the last two years we have taken action to improve financial management, challenge spending, deliver major savings programmes and strengthen accountability across the organisation. The outturn shows those actions are delivering results," Councillor Clark said.

The council continues to face significant financial challenges, particularly around Children & Young People Services and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
