Dudley Council is urging road users and pedestrians to improve their visibility as the clocks have gone back and darker nights draw in.

People are encouraged to wear brightly coloured or fluorescent clothing that shows up well in daylight and at dusk. Small reflective items, such as armbands and stickers, can also help make people more visible when lights shine on them.

Requirements for cyclists

Cyclists are reminded that it is a legal requirement to have clean and working lights at night, as well as a rear reflector.

Safety advice for pedestrians

Pedestrians should always follow the Green Cross Code, use safer places to cross wherever possible and choose well-lit routes when out after dark.

Road safety support in schools

Dudley Council's Road Safety Team provides road safety sessions in all primary school settings in Dudley and offers a range of other services, including cycle training.

Jim Deakin, Director of Neighbourhoods, said: "It is important that everyone takes simple steps to make sure they can be seen during the darker nights. Wearing bright or reflective clothing, using working lights when cycling and choosing well-lit places to cross can all help people to be more visible."
