Dudley Council's cabinet will consider proposals to strengthen its use of Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for elected members at a meeting this evening.
The report being considered proposes enhancements to the council's existing approach, ensuring checks remain current throughout a member's term of office.
What the proposals include
Newly elected Dudley Council members already undertake DBS checks. The new proposals introduce a renewal framework and Enhanced DBS checks for any member roles connected with children's services, education and adult social care. This reflects central government recommendations for all local authorities.

The move is intended to reinforce Dudley Council's commitment to safeguarding, public confidence and effective governance, ensuring appropriate checks are maintained throughout a councillor's period of public service.
Councillor Patrick Harley, Leader of Dudley Council, said: "We take safeguarding responsibilities extremely seriously, and the council is committed to maintaining the highest standards of governance and conduct for elected members. We already operate DBS checks councillors and these additional measures will help ensure arrangements remain current, comprehensive and aligned with emerging best practice."
